Dutch Railways Powered 100% Renewable by 2018

Today the NS (Nederlandse Spoorwegen, transports 1.2 million travellers daily and consumes 1% of Dutch electricity total in the process) has announced that it will run all its trains on renewable energy in 2018. Total annual energy bill Dutch railways: 1.4 TWh, that’s 400,000 Dutch households, think Amsterdam. 50% will come from Dutch sources, the rest from abroad. The plan dated from 2012 and the execution of the plan is outsourced to Dutch energy giant Eneco. The plan encompasses new capacity only and all will be wind. The traveller will not have to pay a higher price for his ticket.
