Liquid metal battery technology has the potential to revolutionise utility scale energy storage, but it’s been a long and difficult road for the creator, Donald Sadoway, and his company, Ambri Inc.
2022 looks like their breakthrough year though, and their liquid metal batteries now look set to become a global phenomenon.

Elestor Attracts 30 Million HBr Flow Battery Capital

Elestor in Arnhem, the Netherlands, has attracted 30 million investment capital, intended for rolling out production capacity for gigascale flow batteries. Elestor was founded in 2014.

Main investor is Norway’s Equinor Ventures. Other consortium participants are the world’s largest storage tank specialist Vopak, investor Invest-NL, Somerset Capital Partners and existing shareholders EIT InnoEnergy and Enfuro Ventures.

Elestor claims its technology can deliver long-term storage at a cost of 5 cent/kWh, or lower with very large installations. Life-time of at least 10,000 cycles.

According to Wikipedia, the electrolyte cost of $20/kWh and power density of 0.8 kWh/liter.
